Ever since the beginning of civilization, people have communicated by means of written messages in public places. From pyramid
paintings to hip hop inspired graffiti art,
vertical spaces have served as canvasses for poetry, devotional messages, simple expressions of territorial claims, and of course art. Many cities invest millions of dollars in the removal of graffiti art every year, while others allow these urban messages to remain untouched. In some cities, more than others, the graffiti has a decidedly political undertone, and can function as a media outlet for those whose voices are less often heard in the mainstream.
